How Often to Water Kikuyu Grass in Cape Town
One of the most common questions we get from Cape Town homeowners is how often to water their Kikuyu grass lawn. The answer depends on whether the lawn is newly laid or established, and what time of year it is.
Newly Laid Kikuyu Grass
For the first two weeks after installation, water your new Kikuyu lawn twice daily — once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. This keeps the soil moist and helps the roots establish. After two weeks, reduce to once daily. After four weeks, you can start watering every two to three days.
Established Kikuyu Grass
Once your Kikuyu lawn is fully established (usually after 6-8 weeks), it becomes quite drought-tolerant. During summer, water deeply once or twice a week rather than lightly every day. Deep watering encourages deep root growth, which makes the lawn more drought-resistant.
Cape Town Water Restrictions
Cape Town has periodic water restrictions that limit when and how much you can water your garden. Always check the current restrictions on the City of Cape Town website. Kikuyu grass is a good choice for Cape Town precisely because it can handle periods of reduced watering better than most other grass varieties.
Signs of Under-Watering
If your Kikuyu lawn is not getting enough water, you will notice the grass blades starting to curl and the colour changing from bright green to a dull, blue-green. The lawn may also feel springy underfoot. Water immediately if you see these signs.
Signs of Over-Watering
Over-watering can be just as damaging as under-watering. Signs include yellowing grass, fungal growth and a spongy feel underfoot. If you notice these signs, reduce your watering frequency and improve drainage if necessary.
